An Advanced Introduction to the Standard Response Protocol and the Standard Reunification Method

Course Description

Introduced in 2009, the Standard Response Protocol is a proven enhancement to school safety planning. Thousands of schools in the US and Canada have adopted the program.

Introduced in 2012, the Standard Reunification Method fills a critical void in school safety planning: How to reunite students with their parents after a crisis.

Also included in the training is a segment on Incident Command and how it relates to crisis management for educators.

Summary

SRP/SRM Full Day Workshop introduces the concepts and history of the SRP and the SRM.

Introductions

Duration

15 minutes

Scope Statement

In this module, participants will receive an overview and schedule of the SRP/SRM Seminar. Participants will complete administrative requirements including registration and training rosters.

Terminal Learning Objective

Participants will recognize the course goal, enabling objectives, course schedule, and course performance requirements.

Enabling Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this module, participants will be able to

state the goal and summarize objectives for the course,
describe the course schedule and complete administrative requirements, and
describe how participant performance is evaluated.

Unit 2

An Introduction to the Standard Response Protocol

Duration

90 minutes

Scope Statement

In this module, participants will receive an overview of the Standard Response Protocol.

Terminal Learning Objective

Participants will gain an understanding of how and why the SRP should be used as an all hazards school safety enhancement.

Enabling Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this module, participants will be able to

state a brief history of SRP,
understand the reasoning behind the program,
recognize how it can be used in managing daily operational school-based events, and
recognize the need for standard practices.

Unit 3

An Introduction to Incident Command

Duration

45 minutes

Scope Statement

This was developed to give participants a top-level, general understanding of the Incident Command System. While it is based on the online training IS-100ScA available from FEMA, this module is a refreshing look at the basics.

Terminal Learning Objective

Participants will gain an understanding of how and why Incident Command should be used in a crisis.

Enabling Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this module, participants will be able to

state a brief history of NIMS,
understand basic Incident Command Structure, and
recognize how it can be used in managing school-based events.

Unit 4

SRP Classroom Training

Duration

60 minutes

Scope Statement

In this module, participants will receive the Classroom Training Presentation of the Standard Response Protocol.

Terminal Learning Objective

Participants will gain the ability to perform classroom training of the Standard Response Protocol.

Enabling Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this module, participants will be able to

state a brief history of SRP,
conduct classroom training, and
field relevant questions regarding the SRP.

Unit 5

An Introduction to the Standard Reunification Method

Duration

90 minutes

Scope Statement

In this module, participants will receive an overview of the Standard Reunification Method, explore case studies, and understand roles and expectations.

Terminal Learning Objective

Participants will gain an understanding of how and why the SRM should be used in the aftermath of a crisis.

Enabling Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this module, participants will be able to

state a brief history of SRM
understand the reasoning behind the program, and
understand how to plan and conduct a student/parent reunification.

Unit 6

The Reunification Operation Kit

Duration

30 minutes

Scope Statement

In this module, participants are introduced to resources and tools to build Reunification Operation Kits (ROK).

Terminal Learning Objective

Participants achieve an understanding of how to create a ROK.

Enabling Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this module, participants will be able to

What's this about?

All materials are made available, in electronic form, at no cost. We don't even charge you an email address. Just download it. (PS. Please let us if you're using the program.)

Our district has a Draconian printing policy. But we're a school. We can buy books!

That said, early in the advocacy of the SRP a principal asked us if we had the materials in book form. Her district had some rather stringent printing policies. And, all of this color material would make her superintendent grumpy. We also had requests for printed posters, handouts and other materials.

The last thing we want to do...

Well, the last thing we wanted to do is print, inventory, fulfill, and ship books or posters. But we found a way.

There is an Amazon subsidiary called CreateSpace that does on-demand printing. And the books are available on Amazon.

For the other printed materials we use Mimeo. There's even an option to customize some the materials.

Again, you do not need to purchase books or materials, in order to use the programs. The printed material is generated using the same PDFs we offer online.

Should I buy books anyway?

We also hear from schools and organizations, who like our programs and philosophies, "What can we do to support The Foundation?"

While the CreateSpace/Amazon thing is pretty cool, we've kept pricing modest. After printing and publishing costs, our royalty is about 23% of the book price. Over time, this has added up to a fun little piece of change, but it's not our intention, nor is it the reality, to fund the organization through book sales. Like we've said, "Just download the materials and print them yourselves."

The Winter Briefings

February 7-8, 2019

Because July doesn't work well for everyone, we are holding a shorter version of The Briefings in the Winter.

This 2-day symposium will open on Thursday, Feb. 7 with a day of keynote presentations by nationally-recognized school safety practitioners. This is followed by a full-day Standard Response Protocol and Standard Reunification Method (SRP and SRM) workshop on Friday, Feb. 8. The expected outcome is that participants will have the ability to perform classroom training in the Standard Response Protocol, implement the program, train other trainers, and handle advanced questions.

The Briefings

A National School Safety Symposium

July 7-10, 2019

About

This 3.5 day Symposium examines lessons learned from traumatic events and reveals new, preemptive school safety measures growing in multiple realms. The Symposium is designed to provide a number of takeaways that districts, departments and agencies can implement immediately. This is not open to the public, and attendees will be asked to show an agency or organization I.D. upon check-in.

Audience

Law enforcement, school personnel, victim advocates, mental health professionals, emergency and risk management staff, school safety teams and all first responders.

Speakers

Presenters include school administrators, law enforcement, criminal justice and school security administrators who have been involved in the response and recovery to school violence and other events.
